Digital Product Design: Re-imagine the Possibilities!

Thanks to the growth of the internet, the demand for digital products, including apps, websites, and interactive screens, continues to skyrocket. But, let’s face it, not every product out there is desirable. You will often come across digital products that are difficult to navigate, load slowly, or need to be more intuitive. A well-functioning digital product mainly depends on its design.

What is Product Digital Design?

It is the process of identifying a gap or needs in the market and creating a viable solution. Once that’s done, the product designer engages real-time users to validate the solution. The design is successful if users confirm that it helps solve their problems effectively. Continual improvement is then done based on customer feedback and evolving market trends.

What is the Digital Design Process

A web designer undertakes several steps to come up with an ideal solution. These include:

  1. Discovery: It involves finding out customers’ problems and desires. While at it, product designers seek to balance a business’ interests with customers’ needs.
  2. Product Strategy: This step is about design thinking. After reviewing all the data obtained. An ideal product should live up to the user’s expectations, be able to rake in sufficient profits, and outshine what the competitor (if any) offers.
  3. Execution: Once the design team establishes the customer, business interests, and a viable solution, they work to create an ideal interface. When ready, users in the target demographic are invited to test it out. The outcome of the test will determine whether it is redesigned or officially launched.
  4. Growth: Once the product is out in the market, there is a need for product development to cope with evolving market trends and incorporate customer feedback.

UX and Digital Product Design

UX (User Experience) is a commonly used term when talking about digital products. It is often used in place of digital product design. However, that is not right as it does mean the same thing.

Though UX designers and digital product designers do similar tasks on paper, there are several differences between what they actually do. UX design systems focus on user satisfaction and ensuring a product fulfills users’ needs.

From design to ideation, the process is people-oriented. After this, the design system seeks to improve product usability and accessibility based on user feedback.

On the other hand, digital product design is more of a package deal. It includes UX, UI, coding, project management, and problem-solving. A digital product designer is described as a ‘jack of all trades’ who works to ensure that all stakeholders are happy. They must create a functional product and, at the same time, ensure that businesses and investors benefit from it.

The Future of Digital Product Design

A glimpse into the future shows that digital product design is here to stay. There is a continual interest in digital technology and how it can be used to achieve business goals. As virtual interactions continue to multiply in the post-Covid world, businesses will expand their presence in the physical and virtual worlds.

Currently, visual designs dominate the market but that will soon change. Digital products will be more immersive and utilize all the senses. We have already witnessed digital products incorporating physical objects such as buttons and consoles.

The trend is likely to continue. New product design trends will prioritize user comfort, safety, and health concerns to solve current digital product problems.

Moreover, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) will likely be more prominent. Already, designers are utilizing it to create new and successful products. Its ability to quickly analyze vast data and find practical solutions in the product design process is invaluable.

Considering the growing digital product market, there is likely to be stiff competition between designers, each trying to outdo the other. Competitive environments usually lead to lower prices and higher quality. I believe that digital product design will be no exception.
